How To Add a Server in MT5

Key Highlights

The steps followed in adding a new server to an MT5 are pretty much the same. In a nutshell, you’ll need:

  • Access to a mobile or desktop MT5 platform
  • Your broker’s name or server address
  • Your login details (username/password) combination

How To Add a Server in MT5?

Adding an additional server to MT5 or any other broker’s platform may become necessary when a trader needs to access multiple accounts hosted on different servers. And while this process is typically straightforward and can be completed from the trading platform, not everyone is able to do so. Hence, the need for this guide. Read on to learn how you can add a new server in desktop MT5, mobile, and broker’s platform, including some vital troubleshooting tips.

Adding a Server on Mobile MT5 (Both Android and iOS)

Adding a server to the mobile MT5 portal is very much straightforward, as shown below. Please make sure to follow each step as detailed as failure to do so will require you to restart the process all over again.

  1. The first step is to access the MT5 app on your mobile. At this point, I am assuming you’ve already completed the download process. If not, check out our earlier guide on the same What Is MT5?. Once open, go to the Menu section (three lines) and click on Manage Accounts.
  2. From here, the next step is to tap on the plus (+) icon located in the top right corner.
  3. Use the search box that appears to locate the name of your broker. Confirm that the spelling is correct before proceeding any further.
  4. You’ll now need to select the server that your broker mentioned in the welcome email sent to you earlier.
  5. Once done, proceed to enter your Login ID and corresponding Password, and hit Submit or Login

How to Add a Server in Desktop MT5

The process followed here is a little bit different, even though some of the steps are the same. To get you started, I will need you to open the Desktop MT5 and locate the File button. Proceed to the section written Open an Account and enter the broker’s name in the search bar. For this, click on the “Add new broker” button. And I will insist that you once again confirm that the spelling is correct before proceeding any further. If need be, you may want to enter the name manually. In case it’s not listed, I’d advise that you submit the IP/server address provided by the broker. Do this in the search box. Below is a step-by-step guide on how to do the same without getting lost.

  1. Open the MT5 platform
  2. Access the list of brokers by clicking on the File button in your top menu
  3. Enter the name of your broker, e.g., Audacity Capital, and hit enter
  4. Select/add server. If the server name appears, click on it. If this doesn’t happen, you’ll have to add a new broker. Before this, consider hitting the Scan button to try and refresh the list generated earlier.
  5. Manual entry of the broker’s name. I recommend that you only use this option if the name of the broker refuses to appear. Make sure you have the server address with you at hand.
  6. Login: From here, all that remains is to log in to your account. Choose the server you wish to use, click Next, and select “connect with an existing trade account.”
  7. You’ll be prompted to enter your username and password before you can click on Finish.

Tips to Consider

Now that you know how to add a server to desktop and mobile MT5, it’s time to look at the tips you need to consider before adding a new server.

  • Ensure Compatibility: Start by confirming that the new server you wish to add matches your particular type of account. For example, you can’t use a live server with a demo account and vice versa.
  • Select the Right Server: Many modern brokers provide multiple servers to help them handle a multitude of clients. To avoid any inconveniences, make sure to only use the recommended broker. Failure to do so may expose you to connection or latency issues.
  • Check Broker Information: There are instances when the server name provided by the broker may fail to appear automatically. If this happens to you, get in touch with the broker and request that they provide you with the accurate details, e.g., server IP address or name.
  • Update Your Platform: Software providers are routinely updating their applications. This means that a new server may fail to appear if you haven’t updated your MT5 trading platform in a while. Therefore, always confirm that you’re using the latest update to get access to new servers and patch known security vulnerabilities.
  • Consider Using a VPS: Some traders use Virtual Private Servers (VPS) when trading for various reasons. If this sounds like you, you should confirm whether the VPS has sufficient specifications to help handle simultaneous server connections. This is especially important for any person using Expert Advisors or running multiple accounts.

How to Troubleshoot Server Connections

There are times when you may need to troubleshoot a server connection because it has failed to connect or because you can’t find the name of the new server despite entering its name several times. If this happens to you, consider following the troubleshooting steps below:

  1. Verify Credentials: Confirm that you have selected the exact same server name that your broker emailed you. Remember, there’s a difference between demo and live servers, just as the MT4 platform is different from the MT5 one.
  2. Look for Updates: Check whether there are new updates that you’re yet to install. Updating to the latest MT5 version will help prevent such problems from occurring.
  3. Check Journal: If verifying credentials and updating to the latest version doesn’t solve your issue, head over to the Journal tab in your terminal and locate the specific error message bothering you.
  4. Refresh/Restart: Sometimes, all you need is to refresh/restart your session to solve such errors. For this, you’ll need to right-click in the window marked “Market Watch.” Select refresh and wait for it to try and re-establish the connection.

Conclusion

Adding a new server to your MT5 platform is a simple process that can be completed in a few steps, as we have seen above. To complete it through MT5's settings, you’ll need to confirm that you’re using the exact details provided by your broker, e.g., IP address and server name. After you have successfully added the new server and completed the login process, you’ll now be in a position to switch from one account to the next with ease.

Moreover, with the new server in place, it will become easier to trade more smoothly and remain connected to your Audacity Capital trading account from any location. For this, I’d suggest that you confirm its addition to both your mobile and desktop systems for a smoother trading experience. If using a VPS to log in to the MT5 system, confirm that its specifications allow it to handle seamless connections.

Adding a new server comes with two main benefits: it enables you to connect to different brokers using the same platform. It additionally allows you access to multiple FX trading accounts. Many traders find that it comes in handy when they need to manage demo and live accounts at the same time.

The information you’ll need to begin this process includes the IP address or server name that your broker provided. Often, this information will have been emailed to you during account sign-up. It will also be crucial to confirm that the server matches the type of account in use, e.g., live or demo.

Verify the details used (server name or IP address) to confirm that they’re accurate. If the problem remains, the next step is to call or email the broker for a confirmation of the same. It would also be a good idea to check whether you’re using the latest version of MT5.

No, it’s not. The login credentials sent by your broker are specific to the new server being added and to the account type in use. This means that you’ll need separate credentials for live and demo accounts, even if they’re both from the same broker.

It’s recommended that you use a VPS when using multiple server connections. A reliable VPS will guarantee continued security and uninterrupted performance when trading.
